20 Struggles of an Actress

as seen by Mirela Buhus in 2020

  1. Doubting one’s talent and even one’s self  - way more often than I’m willing to admit!;

  2. The constant uncertainty - nothing is concrete and constant in the artistic world; one day you might be super successful and the other, bam, nobody knows you anymore;

  3. Not enough financial motivation nor support for that matter - in the beginning and even later on, you have to do a lot of work for free, just for exposure! and as time goes by you get more and more tired and unmotivated;

  4. You’re constantly fatigued because as an actor you basically have several jobs (you’re your own agent, manager, PR, etc, and yes you also have to act as if none of these impediments existed and you always need to be prepared, oh the pressure!);

  5. Your day job doesn’t fulfil you and you’re always conflicted about that, but you need to make a living;

  6. You’re envious of the colleagues who manage to make a living solely out of their art instead of being happy for and learn from them;

  7. You might literally hurt yourself if you’re into method acting and don’t know how to properly use it in your pursue of wanting to make your roles as realistic as possible;

  8. You might need to go to therapy your whole life so get used to that!

  9. You always have to look and be at your best even when you might not feel like it;

  10. There will be soo many times when you’ll want to quit but you’ll never be able to, it’s like a damn drug!

  11. There might be roles that you won’t necessarily like but you’ll be obliged to play them;

  12. All the hard work and research that a role requires, which obviously takes time and no one acknowledges it. They all think that it comes naturally. Yeah, you try memorizing Shakespeare by heart naturally!

  13. You have to deal with so much rejection constantly!

  14. Then there will always be the so-called haters lurking, for whom no matter what you’ll do, it will never be good enough! The ugliest part is when they are part of your own family :(

  15. You must always pay strict attention to your public life as you’ll always be scrutinized as if you’re not only a human.

  16. You’re by default more sensitive than others, which sometimes can be a disadvantage;

  17. You’re prone to more drastic reactions and even madness if you’re not careful;

  18. Some people might unfairly accuse you of “playing theater” even in real life;

  19. If you’re a woman, you’re automatically labeled as a whore because all actresses sleep their way up, right???

  20. Last but not least, you will never have a peaceful day in your life as your mind will be trained to constantly create, wonder and be alert! Not knowing if you’ll ever make it or not…

“I understand now that in our work - doesn't matter whether it's acting or writing - what's important isn't fame or glamour, none of the things I used to dream about, it's the ability to endure.”

Anton Chekhov, The Seagull
